It was a difficult time for Washington as many oh his soldiers were returning to their homes after the previous fighting at the Battle of Long Island. For nearly a month Washington had rested with the main body of his army on Harlem Heights building fortifications and assessing the movements of the British under the leadership of General Sir William Howe. The British and American forces met in battle at the village of White Plains under General Howe and General George Washington. The 13,000 British and Hessians were ranged against 14,500 Americans although only around 4,000 on each side were actually engaged in the Battle of White plains. The Americans were encamped behind entrenchments just north of the village of White Plains with hills at their rear if a retreat became necessary. 1600 militia from Delaware and Maryland under Colonel Haslett were positioned on Chatterton's hill, on the west side of the Bronx. Howe's soldiers constructed a basic bridge across the Bronx to take the steep Chatterton's Hill. The British were successful in forcing an American retreat from White Plain village. Some of the Americans headed across New Jersey to the southern side of the Delaware River. George Washington sent the other part of his army to secure the Highlands of the Hudson. The British returned to Manhattan to attack Fort Washington and the American garrison on Manhattan. It came as a result of men and women yearning to be left alone by centralized government and bureaucracies that inevitably ruin prosperity. Over and over across the American colonies, the people simply aimed to govern themselves, peaceably. The history of the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont is an example of these struggles for freedom. They persevered in obtaining this freedom locally and then came to the aid of the rest of the colonies becoming one of the most renowned militia units of the war.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSimilar to many militia units of the mid to late 1700’s, the Green Mountain Boys were initially put together to support settlers and land speculators settling the mountainous region of what would become the northeast United States in the state of Vermont.\u003cspan\u003e  Likely\u003c\/span\u003e, the main purpose was to defend the settlers from native American attacks or possibly French presence near Canada since British troops were not always nearby.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the spartan militia very quickly became instrumental in defending the territory from incursions by the colonial government of New York. New Hampshire had granted land to Vermont territory settlers in the western part of its colonial borders but New York tried to assert control there after a British court verdict in New York’s favor.\u003cspan\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eThe Green Mountain Boys ensured that New York’s attempt to control this area of modern day Vermont were thwarted and they often used forceful tactics to get the job done. By the early 1770’s the Green Mountain Boys were essentially the governmental authority of the Vermont area and initiated independence efforts from New York.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnder the leadership of Ethan Allen, the Green Mountain Boys earned a reputation for being trustworthy and more importantly, effective. For many militias of the day, this was not always the case.\u003cspan\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eTheir fame was ignited with their unwavering loyalty to their home place of Vermont and inflamed when the cries for independence from Britain became a reality in 1775.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eAbout a month after the events of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, the Green Mountain Boys aided other colonial forces in successfully taking Fort Ticonderoga from the British on May 10, 1775 and then a few other British forts shortly thereafter. And they didn’t stop at forts – they also took a British ship in Lake Champlain. The capture of these forts, the ship and the multitude of cannon and ammunition was essential in shutting off British war capacity from the north. The cannon and ammunition were hauled to Boston and their presence helped force the British from Boston in early 1776.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis fierce spirit of freedom embodied by the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont was so strong, Vermont declared itself an\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eindependent nation\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ein January of 1777.\u003cspan\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eBy this time, leadership of the Green Mountain Boys had changed but their passion for independence had not. Under the command of Seth Warner, Ethan Allen’s cousin, the militia unit was a significant factor in the Battle of Bennington, a major American victory in the revolutionary war.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Green Mountain Boys’ flag was a simple one – the green representing the lush forests and green hills from whence they came and the thirteen stars arrayed in a more natural fashion represented the American colonies.\u003cspan\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eBut their story is more than their flag. Leading up to the Revolutionary War it became a symbol of Colonial ire and resistance. The white pine found in New England, specifically the eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) with heights exceeding 150 feet, was highly desirable for constructing masts in shipbuilding. Twenty years after arrival in the new world, the Pilgrims harvested and exported these pines as far as Madagascar. Due to lack of supply of suitable lumber on the island, England reserved 24 inch (61 cm) diameter trees under the Mast Preservation Clause in the Massachusetts Charter in 1691. The trees were identified by a Surveyor of the King’s Woods (a position of preferment) who would in turn appoint deputies to survey and place the broad arrow symbol on the tree from three hatchet slashings denoting property of the Crown. The broad arrow statutes were not immediately enforced, due to England having access to other sources of timber in the Baltic. However, when this source diminished, additional broad arrow policies acts were passed and enforcement increased in North America. The statutes required colonists prior to harvesting trees from their property to have a King's Surveyor mark the larger diameter trees with the broad arrow and then purchase a royal license to harvest the trees not marked with the broad arrow. The colonists resented the strictures on the timber used for their needs and livelihoods. Prohibitions were disregarded and they practiced \"Swamp Law\", where the pines were harvested according to their needs regardless of statutes.[3] In New Hampshire enforcement led to the Pine Tree Riot in 1772, where a statute had been in effect since 1722 protecting 12 inch diameter trees. After being fined and refusing to pay for possessing trees marked with the broad arrow, a New Hampshire mill owner leading other mill owners and townsmen assaulted the Sheriff and his Deputy sent to arrest him by giving him one lash with a tree switch for every tree which the mill owners were fined, cutting the ears, manes, and tails off their horses, and forced them out of town through a jeering crowd. This was one of the first acts of forcful protest against British policies. The absence of his name on the document did not detract from his immense commitment to support the push for independence and he contributed greatly out of his own wealth to the cause.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the fall of 1775 as tensions with the Crown were coming to a head in the colonies, General Washington was gaining a small amount of traction with summer successes at Fort Ticonderoga and Bunker Hill.  The latter battle was key to keeping the British pinned in at Boston, cut off from resupply; although a technical loss for the Americans, it showed that the fledgling forces had promise. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWith the retreat from Bunker Hill, Washington knew that keeping the British naval reinforcements out of the area would greatly aid his efforts on land. To do so he needed a colonial navy and no such thing existed in even the smallest degree for the Americans.  The Continental Congress was very reluctant to fund the acquisition of ships fearing that this would offend the British further.  So Washington did what great leaders do – he took the matter into his own hands.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUsing his own money, Washington commissioned the outfitting and retro-fitting of six American vessels to cruise the bay area of Boston to harass and hinder the British vessels working to resupply the city.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Washington Cruisers Flag design has a rich history. The pine tree image hearkened back to the earlier stages of the revolution when the colonists had resisted the British attempts to reserve the tall and straight pine trees as masts for their ships.  These conflicts lead to the Pine Tree Riot in 1772, two years before the Boston Tea Party and three years before the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The Brigade was organized as two Regiments, with appropriate battalions, companies, and staff. The name of the Brigade was taken from the mountain range near where the unit was formed, just east of the city of Kielce . After forming, the Brigade fought against both the Soviet occupiers and those from Germany, engaging in a dozen battles with only minor losses to themselves. When the red army started their offensive in mid-January 1945, the Brigade was ordered to withdraw to the west, hoping to meet up with the US Army and then to join other Polish forces fighting with the allies. The Brigade marched over 800 km through the dead of winter, crossing the Sudeten Mountains into Czechoslovakia with the eastern front chasing them. Along the way, they still had to fight both the Germans and Russians. They finally wound up southeast of Pilsen, where they liberated a women’s concentration camp (Holysov) and met up with Patton’s Third Army and fought alongside them the last few days of the war. To my knowledge, the Brigade is the only Polish unit to escape Poland. After the war, the Russians tried to have the Brigade, or at least its leadership extradited for anti-communist activities, but were refused by the US commanders on the scene. At least a few of the Brigade members were kidnapped and never heard from again.
